COTA MIRACLE MAKERS IN ACTION

Key Club in Ohio Makes
All the Difference for a
COTA Teen

Ironton is a small town located on Ohio's southern border. This community of 12,000 may be small in number, but it is huge in 'heart' … which was recently demonstrated when they reached out to help a COTA teen who recently received her second chance at life.

Members of the Ironton High School Key Club worked diligently during late 2010 and early 2011 to support classmate Bethany Bibb, who recently received a double lung transplant. This group of energetic teens joined forces to raise funds

for COTA in honor of Bethany, who has cystic fibrosis. What began as a fundraising idea by Kimberly Kelly, a dedicated science teacher and faculty sponsor for the Ironton High School Key Club, grew into a community-wide effort to put the COTA community campaign "over the top". The Ironton Key Club's efforts resulted in more than $6,000 raised in honor of Bethany.

Key Club is an international student-led organization that provides its members with opportunities to "provide service, build character and develop leadership". These Ironton students certainly did just that.

According to Ms. Kelly (who gives all the credit to her students), "It is amazing

what can be accomplished by a group of young people dedicated to a common goal."

Wanting to help Bethany and fulfill Key Club's vision to "develop competent, capable and caring leaders through the vehicle of service," Ms. Kelly helped her students organize a number of fundraising events culminating with a visit by the Harlem Wizards. At the basketball exhibition and game, Bethany was honored center court and was the star of the evening.
